Great video, Marc. Tracing is a good way to level up your skills. It seems a lot of people are getting hung up on the idea you shouldn't use tracing for ANYTHING, not even training and practice. Tracing for use in final art and not disclosing it to your audience is gonna hurt you as an artist in the long run, while tracing to help develop your fundamentals should absolutely be encouraged.

Does anyone know an easy technique for measuring dynamic poses? Something similar to the "7 heads" method. I'm practicing, but the foreshortening and limb overlapping never looks right.

I started to love drawing by tracing Sonic characters. Then I evolved into drawing anime.

I know as a western comic book penciler/inker, those ugly detail lines are used moreso to help establish form so we don't get rid of them and your line clean up stage is effectively our inking stage, though many penciler now concentrate on this things such as a line weights ect.

That outer glow effect on the highlight is such a neat trick! I would have never thought of that.

5:50 That outer glow layer option makes me want to cry. I use Paint Tool Sai, and have to painstakingly draw the effect manually across the entire drawing with a clipping layer. That shit SUCKS, and usually ends up looking uneven and bleh. I have been feeling more and more limited by Sai's lack of tools lately, I need to look into upgrading.

Tracing over photos won't make you a better artist. Anatomy, pose material, etc. studies will.

Tracing and copying art is a great way to learn! Just don't post it as your own.

I did this, I traced body proportions and some details and after that I did everything on my own like blending adding colors and adding details but then I posted my art to a Facebook page they made fun of me saying tracing is not an art and they ignored the fact that I did everything other than tracing. They even said I'm a loser because I trace. I got demoralized because of this and stopped doing art for weeks and everytime I tried doing art those word lingers inside me and makes me disappointed. Why are there people like that? I ended up deleting my art because of people making fun of it.

I always feel bad for using references lol, especially now that I take commissions. I don’t trace outside of practice but just referencing makes me feel like a fraud

I confess to you, teacher Marc Brunet... Since I recently decided to try to learn how to draw again when I first saw your channel a week or two ago... although I mostly drew in the traditional style (drawing on paper) and I really wanted to draw in digital (since on my 15th birthday my parents bought a drawing tablet, which I really wanted when I was in elementary school, but I very rarely touched it because I’m constantly afraid of making a mistake and constantly scold myself for every wrong one line, expecting great results from myself, having high expectations for myself, forgetting about the drawing process itself... which makes me feel sorry for my drawing tablet).. Now I'm 17... And the first time I wanted to become an artist... was at 7-8 (I don’t remember exactly, but I drew a very clumsy drawing of Sailor Moon at that time).. But I grew up... time passed..... And I began to compare my clumsy drawings with others, more experienced artists.. because of which I began to lose interest in drawing and hate my drawings... Although now that I have grown up.. and you can say I'll be 18 next month.. this means that I will become an adult and a fully capable person... who will not have much free time to draw.. And I kept thinking, is it too late for me to start drawing? After all, I see that some children draw better than me, because of which envy eats me up... not just envy, but dark envy... Which is not good, although I try to calm myself down. And I understand that all artists started from where they drew terribly and they put a lot of practice and time into their drawing skill and knowing this I calm down a little, although not completely.. I’m just trying to bring back that same love and passion for drawing that I had as a child... will I again learn how to love my drawings and not hate myself for them, not to give up on drawing without even starting to draw just because I couldn’t draw a simple sketch, not to procrastinate, but to go towards the goal and draw how I love and what I love.... Overcoming my fear, overcoming my envy and procastination... and just start drawing what I like and how I like... In a sense, you even inspired me and instilled, albeit small and weak, but a glimmer of hope.. that if I put at least a little effort and time into drawing... that I can really call myself an artist in the future.... My way of drawing is: 1.Sketch out my plan 2.Do the linework 3.Add Base colors on separate sections 4.Separately shade each section 5.Merge everything I will definitely try shading everything first, and see what happens :)

This is great! I just watched your other video on deliberate practice and I’m excited to combine that approach with learning to break down anatomy proportions and shapes.

I use tracing after making a Frankensteins monster model to help me make my art, like i take an arm from one pose, a leg from another, etc. Very useful

I needed this. thank you so much!! The focus on your effort part was such a wake-up call. I always over-fixate on details that don't show that much on the final result. the many layers were always a problem for me. I keep on creating backups of certain layers in fear of making a mistake and I might need to go back and redo it. This is a great video every tip and and suggestion made me realize what I've been doing that made me stop finishing an artwork because I get so overwhelmed that I never go back to finish it. Definitely gonna apply and create some changes to my process (which I never have because I usually wing it gonna work on that too LOL).

10:24 this is the part that i want to touch on what if you generate a image then completely modify it using AI such as take say wings from this image and the hairstyle from that image what if you draw your own clothing on it useing your own hand not the AI your still using other peoples art for the wings and hair but you ARE making something that is arguably your own even without drawing the clothing ... or is that what photobashing is dont really know

English is not my first language so i got confused about tracing. What does it actually mean? Is it still considered tracing if i look at an object at from afar and start drawing it cause i do that all the time and now i am getting quite good at it.

I spent 2 years finding brushes that suits me.
